Alexander Isak says he will be “forever grateful” to Newcastle United and the fans after completing his summer move to Liverpool.

The striker was at the centre of one of the biggest transfer sagas in Premier League after he went on strike and publicly accused the club of breaking promises, in order to push through a move to Anfield.

Isak finally got his wish on Deadline Day after Newcastle signed forwards Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade. They subsequently agreed to sell their star player to the Reds for an initial £125m, a British transfer record, and a potential £5m in add-ons.

The enmity between the two parties was evident when Magpies announced his departure with a terse 37-word statement which did not mention the goal he scored In the League Cup final to help the club win their first major trophy in 56 years.

In his first words following the transfer, Isak told the official Liverpool FC website it was a “relief” to join the club after a “long journey to get here”.

He said: “I feel amazing. It’s been a long journey to get here. But I’m super-happy to be a part of this team, this club and everything it stands for. It’s something I’m proud of and I’m really looking forward to it.

“It’s mixed emotions – some relief but a lot of pride, happiness. I’m just happy it’s done and that I can get back to work. I’m looking forward to seeing my teammates and the fans, and getting back out there.”

The Sweden international trained on Tuesday ahead of Friday’s World Cup qualifier against Slovenia, before posting a farewell message on Instagram to his former Newcastle teammates and fans.

“I want to express my gratitude to my teammates, the staff, and above all, the city of Newcastle and all the amazing supporters for the three unforgettable years we shared together.

“Together, we have written history and brought the club to the place where it truly belongs.

“It has been an honour to be part of the journey from reaching the Champions League to winning the first trophy in over 70 years. Forever grateful. Thank you, Newcastle.”

Isak’s agent, Vlado Lemic, however, was not so diplomatic about his feelings towards Newcastle in a short statement released to talkSPORT.

“It’s nice when you have someone to be with, but it is even nicer when you know who you will never be with again,” Lemic said.
