Former Portsmouth midfielder Joe Morrell has caught the eye of Queens Park Rangers, Brimingham City and Wrexham AFC.

Morrell is set to be released by League One Portsmouth and will become a free agent when his deal with Pompey expires at the end of the month.

The 27-year-old has 37 caps for Wales, and has a wealth of experience from playing in both League One and the Championship for the past five seasons.

Journalist Phil Cadden has said that there is interest from the aforementioned trio of clubs in Morrell.

For Football League World's QPR fan pundit, Louis Moir, the need for a midfielder in Marti Cifuentes' squad is there, but he doesn't see Morrell as being someone who can help the team going forward.

QPR should aim higher than Joe Morrell

Moir believes, as the Hoops look to progress up the Championship table, that they need to try to bring in players of a better standard than the 27-year-old, who has played most of his recent football in the third tier.

"Nothing against Morrell but I do think that we should be looking higher up than that," said FLW's QPR fan pundit. "I think we can be more ambitious.

"Obviously he looks like another player that has suffered with injury issues, and, when you look at where he's been playing, mainly in League One. Even as a back-up option for squad depth, I don't think that he's someone that we should be looking at. I think that we can aim a lot higher than that.

"If you look at the reports, there are other clubs that apparently want him, and they're not really on our level. Again, I just think we've got to aim higher.

"Signing someone like him would be quite underwhelming and it probably wouldn't give fans a lot of hope for the transfer window. For me, I don't even think it's true. I think we'll be looking higher than that.

"It's true that we do need more midfielders; maybe one more starter and another back-up option as well. But Morrell wouldn't be for me, and I'd be very underwhelmed if that was true."

Joe Morrell isn't the ideal option to propel QPR up the table

It should come as no surprise to anybody who has watched the R's since Cifuentes arrived that he is a wanted man.

Sunderland are reported to be interested in the Spaniard, but a considerably large compensation fee would need to be paid to take him away from Loftus Road.

QPR have one of the best young coaches in the division, and they need to maximise his effectiveness in case he isn't around for too long.

As has been the case for so long now with this club, they aren't going to have free will in the transfer market.

Their budget will not be on the same scale as other clubs in the division, but the money that they do have could go towards better causes than a League One midfielder who is coming off the back of a major ankle injury.
