On Friday, New York City FC announced the signing of Aiden O’Neill from Royal Standard de Liège in Belgium. O’Neill, a midfielder and the club's first Australian player, has signed a contract through 2028. In addition, it was confirmed that the deal occurred prior to Wednesday's closing of the primary transfer window.
This is not O'Neill's first stop with a City Football Group club. Before Standard, the midfielder played for sister club Melbourne City FC. Hence, he understands the general playing style and expectations across CFG teams. He has also played for Burnley F.C., in which most of his time was spent on loan with teams like Brisbane Roar FC. He has represented Australia as well since making his debut in 2023.
Playing wise, O'Neill predominantly plays as a defensive midfielder but can play in the central midfield. On some occasions, the 26-year-old can step into the backline and play as a center-back. In other words, NYCFC has again brought in another versatile player to increase the options for Pascal Jansen.
Meanwhile, O'Neill is more conservative with how he plays and is not a creative player. He will not be a provider for others, but will be vital in assisting the backline with keeping opposing teams out of the goal. The newest NYCFC player is also known as a disruptor, and his work rate is strong when it comes to retrieving the ball when the other side has possession. He is not afraid to try to score, as he had two goals with Standard Liège. But he will be more of a defensive body in the midfield.
Additionally, O'Neill described himself as a "box-to-box midfielder who’s all about the collective—always ready to give absolutely everything on-and-off the pitch".
With all of this in mind, is the midfielder the replacement for James Sands? The Homegrown legend is out on loan but injured, and there is no guarantee he will make the move to Germany permanent in the future.
It does appear this is the case based on the fact that both players are more defensive minded. But then, what does that mean for Jonathan Shore? The young player has proven he is more than capable of playing and starting with the first team. Although he is more of a central midfielder. Will his minutes reduce significantly? Or is O'Neill's signing a way for Jansen to rotate more in the midfield, despite the lack of a true number ten to backup Maxi Moralez?
Only time will provide this answer. One can also assume that Justin Haak will be utilized more in the backline with the latest addition. Still, O'Neill is a solid signing for the Pigeons and should have an immediate impact. Yes, there were other urgent needs, like a number ten or scoring forward. Nevertheless, this is just the start of what will hopefully lead NYCFC to a good finish at the end of the season.
