Gabonese football is facing yet another tragedy. Barely recovering from the loss of international Aaron Boupendza (28), who died in China after falling from the 11th floor of a residential building, the country now mourns another of its rising stars.According to the latest reports, Kevin Mbakogo, striker for AO Vautour Club and a member of the local national team, passed away on Sunday, June 29 in Libreville after suffering a sudden collapse during a friendly match held in the Likouala district.
The 23-year-old was taking part in an unofficial game to maintain his fitness. He collapsed on the pitch, apparently the victim of cardiac arrest. Rushed to hospital, he sadly could not be revived. This loss is all the more painful as Mbakogo was enjoying the best season of his young career. With 11 goals to his name, he had established himself as one of the most prolific strikers in the Gabonese league, catching the eye of the national technical staff, who had called him up twice. The nation is gripped by emotion. Many clubs, including CF Mounana and Bouenguidi Sports, have expressed their sorrow. The National Professional Football League (LINAFP) also responded with an official statement:
"Death of Gabonese international Kevine Klaïne Mbakogo Ngouas, striker for Vautour Club, following a sudden collapse. LINAFP extends its deepest condolences to his family. Rest in peace, champion."
As a tribute, a minute's silence will be observed at all matches during the next round of the championship.
