Mason Mount’s Manchester United career has stuttered since his high-profile move from Chelsea, but he made his most decisive contribution yet on Thursday night.
The 26-year-old came off the bench in the second half against Athletic Club and transformed a tense encounter, scoring twice to confirm United’s place in the Europa League final.
Mount has struggled with persistent injuries this season, but showed no signs of rust at Old Trafford.
Ten minutes after entering the fray, he received the ball from Leny Yoro in a crowded box, turned sharply and curled home a calm equaliser to make it 1-1 on the night and 4-1 on aggregate.
The pressure that had been mounting on United evaporated almost immediately. His introduction, alongside Luke Shaw and Amad Diallo, gave United renewed balance and clarity.
“We weathered the storm,” Mount told TNT Sports post-match. “Getting that goal calmed us down. I just wanted to come on and affect the game – and thankfully I did.”
The England international’s first goal at Old Trafford was sweet, but his second was spectacular.
Deep into stoppage time, he capitalised on a poor clearance from Julen Agirrezabala, controlled the ball just inside Athletic’s half, and rifled it into an empty net from over 40 yards.
It was the moment of the night, and arguably Mount’s finest since joining United. It capped a 7-2 aggregate win and sparked wild celebrations from the Stretford End to the dugout.
“It was instinct,” Mount said of the long-range effort. “As soon as it came to me, I thought, first touch and shoot. I just tried to get good contact and hit the target.”
The goals could mark a turning point for a player whose debut season has been defined more by frustration than flair.
On this evidence, Mount remains a player of high value who could shape the narrative of United’s campaign.
He admitted the support of the fans made the night more meaningful. “The crowd have been unbelievable,” he added.
“To score my first goals at Old Trafford – in a semi-final – it’s a special moment.”
United will now face Tottenham Hotspur in the final in Bilbao, and Mount’s resurgence could prove pivotal as the Red Devils chase silverware to salvage a turbulent season.
