Birmingham City are almost certainly on the way to lifting the League One title, it is now just a case of when it’s mathematically over.

That means that the Blues can turn their attention early to assessing their squad for the Championship challenge ahead.

It will no doubt mean an influx of new talent, but will also require some decisions to be made about those already at the club, including the likes of Scott Wright.

We asked our Birmingham Fan Pundit, Mike, whether he sees Wright getting an opportunity to prove himself next season.

Scott Wright will need to fight for his Birmingham place next season

Speaking to Football League World, Mike said: “Yeah, I definitely see Scott Wright figuring next year.

“I think he's been very unlucky with injuries. He's had his calf injury that kept him out for a couple of months and now the injury that's put him out until the end of the season.

“But I think when he has played, he's shown a real sort of desire, but really importantly, a real quality.

“He's very good at breaking the lines, he offers something a little bit different from the other wide players that we've got in the team.

“I was really excited about seeing him kick on once he’d got back to full fitness.

“So, you know, it's a real shame because I genuinely think he's been excellent when he's played.

“I think he definitely deserves a chance to prove himself next season once he's fully fit. He's going to be out for some time.

“But at the same time, he's definitely not going to be guaranteed a starting place or even a squad place. I think everyone at the club recognises that the one area we definitely need to improve next year, almost as number one priority, is those wide positions.

“We definitely need to be more creative. We need to be creating more. I think we will have more chances in terms of on the counter-attack and I don't think we'll be as dominant so it's very much a different game plan when that comes into force.

“So yeah, I can definitely see him staying around, definitely think he'll get chances, but I think he would have to settle for being a bit of a squad player because I expect us to invest in those wide areas.”

It’s tricky to judge what space will be available with Birmingham’s investment

We all saw this season how ready Birmingham are to invest in new players for their team under the ownership of Tom Wagner.

They forked out £15m to convince Jay Stansfield to drop down to League One from Premier League outfit Fulham, and that was in a relegation year.

Faced with the proposition of a promotion, and a chance to establish themselves back in the second tier, who knows how much Wagner will be willing to put in, and which players that might draw to St. Andrew’s?

It would be a shock not to see some heavyweight names heading to Birmingham this summer and, as outlined by Mike, Wright plays in a position they will be looking to address.
