Watford have made just one signing during the January transfer window, with only a few days remaining until the end of the month.

The Hornets signed defender James Abankwah on loan from sister club Udinese to strengthen Tom Cleverley's squad, but there is a case to be made that the club needs to make a few more additions before the end of the transfer window if they are going to mount a push for the play-offs during the remainder of the campaign.

Watford were beaten by Coventry City at the weekend, which means they have lost five of their last seven games in the Championship, and now find themselves three points adrift of the top six.

It remains to be seen whether they will make any further additions before the end of the January transfer window, but if the owners want to see an upturn in form, then they may need to invest in a couple of new players, and bringing in a new striker could be their most pressing concern.

Watford urged to strengthen squad

We asked our Watford fan pundit, Justin Beattie, how a dream week in the transfer window would look as we approach the end of January, and he made it clear that he feels the club should make a few new signings before the end of the month.

"A dream last week of the transfer window would have us bringing in a new goalkeeper," said Justin.

"Bachmann is injured and Bond isn't the answer, so we need to bring in a new goalkeeper.

"We need to bring someone in on the left wing, a left wing-back would be ideal, and we need to strengthen what we have got up front, which at the moment is very little.

"There are rumblings that Emmanuel Dennis might be coming back for a third stint at Watford. This, in my opinion, would be a bad mistake.

"He hasn't played a match since he left us last season, so he is not going to be match fit, and he won't be ready to come into the team and do anything for a while.

"We need to bring in an oven-ready Championship striker who can drop into the team straight away and be comfortable up front. Can I see that happening? Probably not.

"I think we are in for a bit of a rough final few months of the season at Watford."

Watford have been linked with Dennis

While Justin feels that it would not be the right decision if Watford were to sign Emmanuel Dennis from Nottingham Forest this month, the 27-year-old has been linked with a return to Vicarage Road, as per Alan Nixon via his Patreon.

Dennis scored 4 goals in 17 Championship appearances for the Hornets during a loan spell last season, but he has not kicked a ball for Forest during the 2024/25 campaign, meaning he may need some time to get up to speed if he does sign for Watford this month.

Justin is right in saying that the Hornets need one or two new players who can hit the ground running immediately, so Dennis might not be the best option, and it remains to be seen whether Cleverley will be able to bring in the reinforcements he needs during the coming days.
