It’s a sad moment for Chelsea fans today as the news comes out that Jamal Musiala has finally signed a new contact at Bayern Munich.

The former Blues academy kid has been tantalising everyone in football by letting his deal run down, but he finally has today done what was always expected and committed to the German giants on a 5 and a half year deal.

The links to Chelsea really grew pretty significant at some point – Jacob Steinberg was among the people reporting that we were “monitoring” the 21 year old a year ago. Top German football insider Christian Falk wrote that we were “keeping an eye” on him too.

Musiala a pipe dream – but one Chelsea fans have enjoyed for a hwile

Re-signing Musiala would have been the dream move for many fans. With an insane 58 goals and 38 assists in fewer than 200 games, he’s a talent of the very highest degree. Perhaps it wasn’t ever realistic that we would sign him – certainly it would have proved almost impossible to fit him into our wage structure. We came so close to signing Michael Olise last summer but broke off talks in the end because of his salary demands.

The case would be very similar with Musiala, one imagines. He has likely secured an even bigger bag than Olise given his pedigree and his contract situation. Barring injury, he looks well set to be one of the best players in the world over the next ten years, and the prospect of him lining up alongside Olise is just scary. The technical level the two of them have is just astronomical. If Bayern don’t get back to the top of the game with them around, we’ll be stunned.

One day maybe we’ll see him back at the Bridge… but it won’t be anytime soon.
