Real Sociedad goalkeeper Alex Remiro has revealed that he likes to watch Manchester United ahead of the Europa League game between both clubs tonight.
The Red Devils will take on the La Liga club later today in the first-leg of the round of 16 of the second-tier European competition, and the Spain international knows what to expect from them.
Remiro was linked with Man United ahead of the 2024 summer transfer window, and the Old Trafford club were told they needed to activate his €70 million buy-out clause to land him.
He won the European Championship last summer with Spain and is looking forward to playing against the Red Devils again after meeting them in 2021.
“Yes, they overran us so clearly; the difference was huge,” Remiro told the Guardian while admitting that the loss to Man United changed things.
“We could compete in terms of play but physically they were better than us in everything. It finished 4-0 but it could have been seven or eight. We were awful. And watching them it was like: “Bloody hell, this is …” It was: “Wow!”
Man United have Andre Onana as their first-choice goalie, but he has not been consistent and it is believed head coach Ruben Amorim could sign a better option in the position.
Remiro could catch the eyes of the Portuguese tonight and next week if he impresses, and no one would bet against the 29-year-old Copa del Rey winner doing that as he has kept more clean sheets (12) than any other goalkeeper in the La Liga this season.
He also knows what is required of a Man United goalie having been watching their games regularly recently.
“Yes,” the Sociedad star replied when asked if he is watching United now.
“For work and because I like to. I feel like the same is happening to them as happens to us, a bit. They have players with huge potential but they don’t seem to quite find the solution to be the team they once were, to be higher up.
“Maybe they need a run of five, six, seven games winning, but something always happens. I like the new coach, I like his ideas – I liked Erik ten Hag too – but it feels like something always goes wrong.”
The Red Devils will be without Manuel Ugarte and Harry Maguire tonight, but they will fancy their chances of leaving Spain with a decent result ahead of the return leg at Old Trafford next week.
However, they have to beat Remiro – who kept the second-most clean sheets in each of the last two seasons in La Liga – to have any chance of progressing to the quarter-finals, and the coaching staff would likely be watching every of his moves over the next two legs.
