Renato Veiga’s loan to Juventus was completed last night, and we wrote at the time that we were curious to see what the terms of this rather strange deal were.
Well, as Juventus are a publicly listed company they have to reveal quite a lot of details about these things, so here we are 24 hours later with more insight thanks to the information digested by Football Italia.
They say that the deal is €4m plus add-ons and bonuses. It’s what they charmingly call in Italy a “dry” loan, meaning there is no option to buy included. The formal statement from the club said it was a €3.8m deal with €0.2m in add-ons potentially also available.
However, there’s also a €1.5m in “performance related bonuses.” We’re not quite sure how a bonus is different to an add on, but either way the potential final fee is €5.5. Chelsea are paying his salary for the duration of the loan, which is just until the end of the season.
Renato Veiga takes his Juventus medical.
So in the end, Chelsea get about €4m for 6 months of a player that they only paid €12m for in the summer. It’s a good return in pure numbers – but football is about more than the numbers.
In the grand scheme of things, considering the money Chelsea spend regularly, this is just pocket change. And the disruption to the squad barely makes it worth it. The only explanation is that Veiga really was pushing hard for this and was threatening to damage the harmony in the squad if he wasn’t allowed to go.
We assume that if he does well at Juve, they will be interested in a permanent deal in the summer – or certainly someone else would be.
Curiously, he will return to Chelsea in time for the Club World Cup – so this might not be the last we see of him this season.
