Declan Rice was an obvious inclusion, as a regular for England over the last few years.

Arsenal summer signings Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke have both played limited minutes for the Gunners so far, but they both made the cut on this occasion.

Eze has been playing for Crystal Palace up until now, and Madueke’s chances were probably boosted by Bukayo Saka’s absence.

Of Arsenal’s young players, Myles Lewis-Skelly was always the most likely to be called up, and he is indeed involved. As for Ethan Nwaneri, it seems the young midfielder will continue to be involved in the lower age groups.

The same will be true of Max Dowman, whose one Premier League appearance was impressive, but not enough to immediately propel him into the England senior squad.

Saka and Ben White are both missing out due to their current injury issues, with Saka set to miss up to four weeks of action and White reportedly still a doubt to return for Arsenal against Liverpool this weekend.

Reiss Nelson is perhaps the only other Arsenal player worthy of mention, having played for the England u21s regularly in the past. But the winger hasn’t been in action for Arsenal lately, at least in competitive fixtures. It was never likely he’d be called up.

England will face Andorra on Saturday, September 6th and Serbia away on Tuesday, September 9th. Both games are World Cup qualifiers, with England currently leading the group ahead of Greece.
