Spain maintained their perfect record at the 2025 UEFA Women’s European Championship with a commanding 3–1 win over Italy on July 11.
Despite falling behind early, La Roja responded with poise, creativity, and clinical finishing to top Group B with three wins from three.
Here’s what we learned from the match in Berne.
Italy struck first with a sharp finish by Elisabetta Oliviero in the 10th minute, capitalising on a fleeting Spanish defensive mistake. But Spain responded fiercely and showed their champion credentials - Athenea del Castillo equalised in the 14th minute following a brilliant backheel assist from Alexia Putellas.

Right after halftime, Patri Guijarro seized a loose ball inside the box—again following Athenea’s superb individual play—to make it 2–1 in the 49th minute. Spain’s midfield, orchestrated by Guijarro, Aitana Bonmatí and Putellas, effectively stifled Italy’s rhythm in the second half.

Alexia Putellas was pivotal throughout - providing the assist for both Del Castillo’s equaliser and Esther González's stoppage-time goal (her fourth of the tournament), which confirmed Spain's 3–1 win and a flawless three wins from three record in the group.
It also saw the Barcelona superstar equal Beth Mead's record for most goal contributions (seven) in the group stage of a European Championships.
