Two players Sheffield Wednesday should look to sign as a free agent this summer
Sheffield Wednesday are preparing for their third season back in the Championship.
The Owls have had a turbulent summer so far, with uncertainty surrounding the players, the manager and the owner.
There is now less than a month until their opening game of the new campaign, in which they will face Leicester City on 10 August.
It’s still unclear what the shape of the team may be by then, or even who will be in the dugout for the Yorkshire outfit then, but they do still have the opportunity to register free agents despite a transfer fee restriction.
Here we look at two free agents Sheffield Wednesday should look to sign following the arrival of Stuart Armstrong after his exit from the Vancouver Whitecaps…
Josuha Guilavogui is currently available as a free agent after departing Leeds United at the end of the campaign.
The midfielder earned some Championship experience, and even knows what it takes to gain promotion to the Premier League after his stint at Elland Road.
While his influence in Daniel Farke's side wasn't too strong amid their rise to the top flight, he still showed himself as a valuable member of the squad and proved he could compete at this level.
His defensive solidity from midfield could be just what Sheffield Wednesday need going into the new campaign, especially if they’re left with a depleted squad.
The 34-year-old will also add experience to a squad that could look quite young by the end of the summer transfer window if the Owls have to sell players to raise funds, and others walk away by terminating their contracts.
Of course, Sheffield Wednesday’s own financial issues could be a problem, as they will need to guarantee someone of Guilavogui’s calibre that he will be paid accordingly.
According to estimated figures from Capology, the midfielder was earning £15,000 per week at Elland Road.
He will surely want a figure of a similar size in order to make the switch to Hillsborough, so will need assurances that won’t be a problem in order to be convinced to join.
Sheffield Wednesday are in need of a new goalkeeper for the upcoming campaign, with just one option in the squad going into the season.
Pierce Charles is only 19, and it’s unclear whether he could be trusted to play every week at this level at this stage of his career.
But, even if he was capable of competing at this level, Sheffield Wednesday will also want to guarantee that he has a backup providing cover and competition.
Angus Gunn would be an excellent free agent addition for the Owls, with the 29-year-old having bags of experience to his name at this point in his career.
Meanwhile, Charles has just eight Championship games under his belt, so having someone like Gunn to push him and mentor him could be just what he needs.
Gunn has played in the Premier League, and is a Scotland international, so bringing him to Hillsborough would be a real coup.
If he can be convinced to stay in English football and make the switch to Hillsborough, then that could prove a crucial move for Sheffield Wednesday for the upcoming campaign.
