It’s a name that has been mentioned in connection with tons of top clubs, and we’re surprised it’s taken this long for Chelsea to register an interest.

Teun Koopmeiners has been linked endlessly with Liverpool, but now HITC say that Chelsea are elbowing their way into the discussion. They, along with the Reds, had scouts watching him in the Coppa Italia final this week playing for Atalanta in their defeat to Juventus.

26 year old Koopmeiners has looked brilliant in Serie A since taking the step up to a top 5 European league, and bagged 15 goals this season in a marauding box to box role. It’s easy to see his high energy style fitting in to what Mauricio Pochettino likes. He certainly has a more dynamic aspect than Enzo, whose style is more technical and considered, all told.

Midfield questions remain for Chelsea

Midfield is a funny area for Chelsea to address this summer. On the one hand we spent this whole season stretched desperately thin there, with Enzo Fernandez, Conor Gallagher and Moises Caicedo having to play far more than they should, especially after Christmas, simply because there were not enough options available to rotate them with.

From that perspective, signing a new addition makes sense. But one has to remember that Romeo Lavia and Lesley Ugochukwu are both on the books already, and will be hoping to play an important role, not to mention players like Carney Chukwuemeka who can also be used as a box to box 8.

Koopmeiners looks a great player, but he’s not top of the list of needs right now. Why sell Conor Gallagher just to buy a similar player, and one who might well simply not be as good? It wouldn’t make sense to us, and we hope the club feel the same.
