Manchester United will head into the new year in the bottom half of the table, and head coach Ruben Amorim has stressed that this cannot become the norm for the club.

Asked how United have ended up 13th, the 39-year-old said: “It’s a difficult question to answer and we cannot let this become normal. It’s a tough moment and it’s on me. Since the first day that I arrived, it’s on me.

“I’m responsible for the team. We cannot think about that. We have to focus on improving and understanding the context, not on the past. The present is this, what we have to do for the future is not let this happen again.”

Expanding on why the Red Devils are so low in the league, he said: “If I knew, I would solve all the problems at this club. I know what I’m going to do, this is so clear for me. This is why I feel so, not relaxed because I’m frustrated like the fans, but I know what to do.

“We have to solve some problems step by step finding the answers for everything but it’s a very difficult moment. We understand the fans.”

United have lost seven of their 17 league games so far this season, winning only six. They are six points behind Bournemouth, who they lost to on Sunday.

They have a huge game on Boxing Day against a struggling Wolves team and nothing less than a win will suffice.
