All the attention at the moment is on the players Chelsea are trying to buy – Liam Delap is in, Mike Maignan is out, Jamie Gittens is getting shaken all about.
But with most of this summer’s incoming deals already done (Delap, Dario Essugo, Andrey Santos, Mamadou Sarr, Estevao Willian, etc.) there stands to be a lot more departures than additions. And they’re potentially more intriguing storylines too.

That’s Nizaar Kinsella has focused on in his piece for the BBC today. He reels off a long list of players who could go: Raheem Sterling, Axel Disasi, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Djordje Petrovic, Armando Broja, Joao Felix, Renato Veiga, Ben Chilwell, Carney Chukwuemeka and Lesley Ugochukwu are “available for sale” and in most cases the club would rather wash their hands of them rather than “carry around a large group of loanees.”
However as we saw with Chilwell, Sterling and others last summer, it’s easier said than done when some of them are on big wages.
In some cases a loan can work nicely to let a player with plenty of contract build up some value by playing. In other cases it’s just a question of being preferable to having them rot in the reserves.
As last summer, we expect nothing much on the loan front until the last week or so, when things could get hectic.
According to Kinsella, the next wave of players set to join our sister club Strasbourg are already being decided, with Mathis Amougou and Kendry Paez the two he names. One other can join them, but that will likely be dictated by what progress is made with sales in the next month or so.
