Mikey Johnston is set for another season on the periphery of the first team if he stays at Celtic.

That’s according to former Hoops hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Johnson’s future.

Johnston, 22, has only made nine appearances this season due to a ligament injury he picked up last year.

He came on with 15 minutes remaining against Rangers but struggled to make an impact as Celtic were down to 10 men.

McAvennie claims Johnston makes too many mistakes and looked too lightweight during his Ibrox cameo.

When asked if Johnston could play a vital role for Celtic next year, McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild, “no, not for me.

“I don’t see it. He’s too lightweight. He came on against Rangers and immediately got shoved off the ball.

“I just thought, ‘come on, really?’ You’ve got to be strong. Not in a sense of being nasty and hurting somebody. You’ve got to put yourself about.

“He’s been around for a long time but he’s never been in the team for a period of time. I don’t know if the new manager will want him.

“He’s got ability but it’s almost as if he hasn’t been taught anything, he makes too many mistakes.

“If he stays, he won’t be a regular starter.”

Johnston enjoyed a run of games over the festive period but suffered another injury setback in February’s clash with Kilmarnock.

He has 59 total appearances for Celtic after making his Scottish Premiership debut back in 2017.
