Mesut Özil has been left out of Arsenal’s Europa League squad along with defender Sokratis, according to Goal.

The 25-man squad may only contain 17 ‘non locally trained players’ and Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has opted to cut the club’s highest paid player, who is yet to play a single minute since football restarted in June.

On Tuesday, Özil made the news when he offered pay the salary of Jerry Quy – the man behind the club’s iconic Gunnersaurus mascot – who was let go as a cost-cutting measure on transfer deadline day.

The former German international playmaker’s last Arsenal appearance came against West Ham back in March – the game before football was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

He has not featured in a single matchday squad so far this season, despite being fit to play.

Arsenal’s 25-man squad for the Europa League will be officially confirmed by UEFA on Thursday.
