The former Uruguay international striker featured for a host of Mexican clubs, though he is best remembered for his time on loan at Cruz Azul from Spanish side Deportivo de La Coruña in 2002-03.

His 16-year-old son, Diego Abreu, is currently lining out for Defensor Sporting’s U19 side in Uruguay.

Diego, who was born in Mexico in 2003, has already answered the call to pull on the Mexican jersey for the U18 national team.

“In the call for the U18, I was talking to some colleagues from Chivas and they told me about the club, about how they train the players in the First Division and they spoke to me very well, so it would be nice,” the teenager told Mexican channel TVC Deportes.
