América will attempt to extend their CONCACAF Champions League record to eight total title victories beginning tonight when the Mexican giants play away to Guatemala’s Comunicaciones FC.

Comunicaciones will not be a walkover, as they are making their sixth appearance in the tournament since the tournament rebranded itself from the Champions’ Cup to the CONCACAF Champions League. América, in comparison, have only made five.

América and Comunicaciones were grouped together back during the 2014-15 edition of the tournament. The two teams played to a 1-1 draw in Guatemala in August, while América emerged 2-0 winners in the return fixture in October.

América have an absurd record in the tournament overall, winning a total of seven trophies despite only participating in the tournament 12 times.

Comunicaciones, on the other hand, shared the 1978 title with two other clubs while finishing runners-up in 1962 and 1969.

Miguel Herrera has yet to win the trophy as a manager. In fact, if Piojo does not win the competition at the end of the season, he will become the first América manager to be eliminated three times in the tournament.

The last time América featured in the tournament was in 2018, when they bowed out in the semi-finals as Toronto FC earned an impressive 4-2 aggregate victory.
