Just like David Beckham in 2007, Gareth Bale could soon become the next big name to swap Real Madrid for Major League Soccer.
That’s according to Spanish outlet El Desmarque, who report that Beckham’s former club LA Galaxy and Inter Miami – the new MLS franchise owned by the former England captain – are both interested in offering Bale an escape route from Los Blancos.
Despite winning four Champions Leagues during his time in the Spanish capital, Bale has become an unpopular figure at the Bernabeu in recent years and Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane made no secret of his desire to offload the Welshman last summer.
But though the 30-year-old ended up staying and has made 14 appearances in all competitions this season, there is reportedly still a desire in the corridors of power to get his huge salary off the club’s wage bill as soon as possible.
A move to the Chinese Super League fell through last summer and now El Desmarque claim he could move to MLS this month, while Chelsea have also been floated as a possible destination.
Bale missed Madrid’s Supercopa de España victory over Valencia with an infection on Wednesday and Zidane confirmed after the game that the winger will not be available for Sunday’s final against either Barcelona or Atlético Madrid.
“At the moment he [Bale] is not ready,” Zidane told the club’s official website.
“He did not train this week. We have to speak to doctors, but the important thing is what the players did and we’re happy with the game.”
