Tottenham are being heavily linked with Flamengo’s Gerson as José Mourinho looks to stamp his mark on the Spurs squad.
The story was first reported by 90min.com last week, but Bleacher Report have since said that their sources confirm a deal for the 22-year-old midfielder is in the works.
Gerson was a central figure in Flamengo’s amazing 2019 season that saw them claim the Copa Libertadores, Campeonato Carioca and the Brasileirão.
The Brazil U20 international also impressed at the FIFA Club World Cup in Qatar where Flamengo narrowly lost 1-0 to Liverpool in the final.
Gerson came up through the ranks at Fluminese before landing a €15m move to Italian side Roma in 2016.
The left-footed player failed to make a serious breakthrough with the Giallorossi and was loaned out to Fiorentina for the 2018/19 season.
Roma then decided to cut their losses by selling Gerson to Flamengo last summer in a deal reported to be worth in the region of €12m.
With Christian Eriksen all but certain to leave Tottenham either in January or when his contract runs out next summer, Mourinho is certainly in the market for a new playmaker.
While Flamengo would prefer to hold on a player who is contracted with them until the end of 2023, the Rio club are said to be open to an agreement that would see Gerson sign for Tottenham next month but remain with the Rubro-Negro until the summer.
