Mikel Arteta says he would not have wanted anyone else to take on the chance Heung-Min Son missed against Man City on Tuesday, which could potentially have a big impact on the Premier League title race.

City beat Arsenal’s fierce rivals Tottenham 2-0 to put themselves in control of the title race with a game remaining and can win the league by beating West Ham on Sunday.

But it could have been a different story had Son converted his late one v one chance against Stefan Ortega, which would have made the score 1-1.

Arteta says he backed Son to score the chance but insists that surprises like this are part of “the beauty of sport”.

“If I had to pick a player in the Premier League for that moment, it is probably him,” Arteta said.

“But Michael Jordan explained it many times. How many he times he had the winning shot, it was always him, and sometimes yes but sometimes he didn’t manage to do it.

“This is the beauty of sport as well so what can you do?

“My kids were running round the table and going like this (puts his hands on his head).

“That’s magic as well, to have the opportunity to be living there next to your family and colleagues and being part of that because don’t forget not long ago, it was done seven, eight or ten games ago.”
