Journalist Ben Jacobs has outlined how important Premier League promotion will be to Leeds United’s summer plans.

The Whites suffered a major setback on Friday night when they lost 4-0 away to QPR.

Ipswich Town’s 3-3 draw on Saturday evening away to Hull City boosted their chances of a top two spot, but the Tractor Boys still have the advantage going into the final week of the regular season.

Daniel Farke will be aiming to guide the Yorkshire outfit back to the top flight at the first attempt following their relegation last year.

But the team may have to settle for a play-off place unless Kieran McKenna’s team fail to pick up four points from their final two games.

Leeds United’s summer plans hinge on Premier League promotion

Jacobs has outlined a meeting Farke held with the Leeds hierarchy, as the club begins preparations for their upcoming summer business.

He has claimed that only promotion to the top flight would allow the Whites to hold onto their core spine of players.

"If Leeds go up, the aim will be to keep the core of their squad together,” said Jacobs, via Give Me Sport.

The Leeds ownership have already had one meeting with Daniel Farke as part of their pre-summer planning. In that meeting, they have made it clear that promotion to the Premier League will afford him the ability to keep the spine of his squad together.

"Leeds are fighting to return to the Premier League and the added bonus of that is, if they do so, they will be in a position to rebuff offers.

"If someone comes calling for Wilfried Gnonto and Leeds are in the Premier League, and they don't want to sell him, I would expect him to have learned from that original Everton saga and to handle it a lot differently."

Leeds United league position

Leeds are currently second in the Championship table, level on points with Ipswich in third but ahead due to a superior goal difference.

However, the Suffolk outfit holds a game in hand on their rivals, which could take them ahead going into this weekend’s final full round of fixtures.

Ipswich will face Coventry City midweek, where avoiding defeat will move them ahead of Farke’s team in the table.

Leeds will face Southampton at home on the final day of the campaign next Saturday, where they will surely need a victory to give them the best chance at earning automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Huge week ahead for Leeds

Leeds can only watch on now and hope that the Sky Blues do them a huge favour midweek against Ipswich.

Otherwise, the club will have to settle for a play-off place, which comes at a huge risk of missing out on promotion.

The defeat to QPR was a humiliating result to suffer at this stage of the season, with the pressure of their promotion battle impacting performances in recent weeks.

This latest transfer update outlines just how important promotion is to Leeds, as keeping this core of players together could be really exciting for supporters.
