Premier League Awards: City champions, Caicedo’s corker | OneFootball

For the final time in the 2023/24 season, it’s our Premier League Weekly Awards, celebrating the best and worst of the top-flight action from the weekend.

Moment of the Week

For the tenth time, the Premier League title race went down to the final day with Manchester City needing to win to be confirmed as champions. Dropped points at home to West Ham would have allowed Arsenal to overhaul them with a win of their own over Everton, but it took just 77 seconds for the nerves to be settled at the Etihad.

Phil Foden, as he has done so often this season, rose to the occasion for Pep Guardiola’s side. In what is fast becoming a trademark finish for Foden, he took the ball on the back foot in a central area, opened up, and let fly into the top corner.

It was a special goal from a special player and set the Citizens on their way to a record-breaking fourth consecutive Premier League title.

Foden, still just 23, now has six Premier League winner’s medals, more than John Terry and Wayne Rooney.

Elsewhere there was an emotional goodbye to Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool. The German departs Anfield as the only Liverpool manager to win each of the top-flight, European Cup/Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup, while his 60.9% win rate in all competitions is the highest of any manager in the club’s history.

A final rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone was a fitting farewell to a Liverpool legend.

However, Klopp’s exit wasn’t the only teary goodbye…

Player of the Week

Jean-Philippe Mateta and Crystal Palace will not have wanted this season to end with the Eagles and their free-scoring forward bang in form.

Olivier Glasner’s side humbled Aston Villa in a five-star performance on the final day, with Mateta helping himself to a hat-trick to take his total to 13 goals in his last 13 appearances. The Frenchman is oozing confidence right now and was in the right place at the right time to take his trio of chances while adding an assist in a near inter-change with Eberechi Eze.

Having scored just seven league goals across his first two seasons with Palace, Mateta has ended 2023/24 with 16 in the Premier League. It’s the highest total a Palace player has scored in the top flight since Andrew Johnson in 2004/05 (21).

Goal of the Week

Moises Caicedo had never previously scored for Chelsea and it’s unlikely the midfielder will ever score a better goal than his first for the club. The Ecuador midfielder has made big improvements after a tough start to his high-profile move to Stamford Bridge last summer and ended the campaign with a crucial goal as Chelsea sealed their place in Europe.

Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto was punished spectacularly, as the wayward goalkeeper’s clearance fell to Caicedo, who lifted in a finish from all of 50 yards.

It was a weekend of great goals in the Premier League and we cannot move on without a special mention for Mohammed Kudus. The Ghana international briefly unnerved Manchester City in their title-deciding clash with a moment of magic at the Etihad.

Stat of the Week

Pep Guardiola’s greatness is being enhanced with each season and the Manchester City record-breaker made more history in 2023/24.

The Citizens are the first team in English football history to win four consecutive league titles, while Guardiola’s six titles are second only to Sir Alex Ferguson.
