The two sides entering this matchday 38 contest in Brasileiro Série A could not have been farther apart.
Home team Palmeiras had already wrapped up their league title while Vitória were guaranteed relegation to Série B.
Captain Bruno Henrique scored a late match-winning goal for the champions after they had been pinned back in the second half.
Edu Dracena opened the scoring at the end of the first half after a broken free kick play. The centre back headed past goalkeeper João Gabriel on a cross from Dudu in the 43rd minute.
The home team doubled their advantage in the 57th minute. Winger Gustavo Scarpa hit a shot from distance that took a deflection off of Vitória midfielder Lucas Fernandes and eluded the goalkeeper.
Vitória stormed back into the match with a quick double-fire inside three minutes.
23-year-old midfielder Yago scored from the penalty spot in the 71st minute after being fouled by centre back Antônio Carlos, though the contact appeared to be outside of the area.
Luan Silva equalised the match in the 73rd minute with a superb bit of skill on an assist from right back Fabiano.
Bruno Henrique scored the winning goal in the final minute of the match in front of the crowd at Allianz Parque. Posted up outside the 18-yard-box, the club captain struck a rocket into the back of the net to win the match for the league champions.
Vitória end the season in 19th place and will be relegated to Série B for next year.
Palmeiras finish the Brasileirão campaign with 80 points, a total met by the triumphant Corinthians side in 2016.
