After transfers to Bundesliga sides VfL Wolfsburg, Eintracht Frankfurt and Hertha BSC did not materialise, the 25-year-old joined Premjer-Liga side Dynamo Moscow, who met Dortmund’s asking price of €20m.
The versatile forward joined the Black and Yellows in 2017 from SC Freiburg for €20m but only registered one goal and one assist for Dortmund in the previous Bundesliga season, falling out of favour under Favre among stiff competition.
With the additions of Thorgan Hazard and Julian Brandt, Philipp’s perspective at the Westfalenstadion ceased to exist.
Sporting director Michael Zorc was quoted in BVB’s press release: „We thank Maximilian Philipp for his efforts at Borussia Dortmund and wish him all the best and success with his new employer.“
Philipp said: “It was something special for me to play for Borussia Dortmund. I want to thank the Black and Yellow family for their support in the past two years. At my age, it’s my highest priority to have as much playing time as possible, which is why I am now looking forward to the new challenge.”
After André Schürrle, who joined Spartak Moscow on loan, Philipp is the second player Zorc could offload to Russia.
