Borussia Dortmund midfielder Marius Wolf joined Hertha Berlin on loan on deadline day.

The 24-year-old joins the capital club one a one-year loan deal while his current Dortmund contract expires in June 2023. The Black and Yellows have used the deadline day to reduce their wage bill while Hertha Berlin sign a “fast, flexible player with mentality,” according to Hertha sporting director Michael Preetz.

The transfer leaves Dortmund with six options for the wing in Jadon Sancho, Thorgan Hazard, Raphael Guerreiro, Achraf Hakimi, Jacob Bruun Larsen and Julian Brandt.

Lucien Favre’s men certainly will miss the fighting spirit of the former Eintracht Frankfurt player. Especially Marco Reus will feel the absence of Wolf in the dressing room.

Leashed Wolf

Wolf’s technical limitations, however, have visibly restricted his playing time at Dortmund. After he played 2790 minutes for Frankfurt in the 2017/18 season, he mustered less than half minutes (1228) in his first season at the German vice-champion. In 16 Bundesliga appearances, he scored one goal — which was against his former club.

The winger, who has been utilised by Favre as a right-back toward the end of last season, only made one nine-minute cameo in the DFL Supercup this season.

It is unlikely that Wolf will have a perspective at Dortmund after his loan expires. This will likely mean the end for Wolf at BVB after just one season and is another reminder of Michael Zorc’s mixed success rate of acquiring Bundesliga talent.
