Lille booked their place in the Champions League qualification stage last night, but head coach Paulo Fonseca stopped short of committing his future to the club amid links with AC Milan.

Les Dogues drew 2-2 with OGC Nice to ensure that they got a top four finish in Ligue 1, but Brest’s win means that they jumped above them into third and thus secured direct qualification for the Champions League, meaning Lille must go through the qualification process.

In the meantime, Fonseca’s contract is set to expire meaning that he will soon be free to join another club should he choose to do some, and recent reports have suggested he is a frontrunner for the Milan job.

Fonseca was asked about his future after the game against Nice and he admitted that he has a decision to make regarding where he coaches next season.

“I will make my decision this week. I still have to speak to the president, with whom I have a meeting to discuss the future. I think next week will be decisive for my future,” he said (via MilanNews).

Lille president Olivier Létang spoke on the matter too a few minutes after the full-time whistle went, and he also confirmed that a decisive meeting is on the agenda.

“In general, this evening I don’t want to talk about individual cases. We’ll sit down and talk at the beginning of the week. Everything remains possible,” he said.

“Of course, direct qualification for the Champions League would have been something more positive for everyone, but I want to remember the overall result.”
