The home side had the better of the opening exchanges without threatening Jordan Pickford, with Rob Edwards’ side dominating the ball and probing for an opening in the Toffees’ backline.

Everton grew into the game though, and tested the Luton backline twice in quick succession when Kaminski saved a deflection from his own player before the Hatters threw themselves in front of an Idrissa Gueye effort.

Moments later, they were handed a golden opportunity to take the lead when Teden Mengi held Jarrad Branthwaite from a corner, which after a VAR review resulted in a spot kick for the visitors.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin made no mistake from 12 yards, leaving Luton with a mountain to climb.

But climb they tried; seven minutes after falling behind they were on level terms, with Elijah Adebayo chesting down a long ball before blasting the ball past Pickford.

Neither side could get on top as the first half rolled on, with neither goalkeeper having too much to do aside from pick the ball out of their net.

Luton began the second half the stronger, as Gabriel Osho curled an effort wide and Mengi headed over as the Hatters looked for the pivotal breakthrough.

At the other end, Everton came closest through a deflected effort from Jack Harrison, that forced Kaminski to tip it behind for a corner.

The Hatters pushed on for a vital winner, but they couldn’t find a way through despite a late flurry of set pieces and ultimately were left to settle for a point, leaving them still in the relegation zone and having played a game more than 17th placed Nottingham Forest.
