Barcelona are very interested in a summer move for Athletic Club’s Nico Williams, who they’ve identified as a top target for the upcoming transfer window. Their pursuit of the 21-year-old appeared to be boosted earlier this week, when it was reported that Chelsea and Aston Villa are no longer in the race.

Their reasons for backing away from Williams is to do with his reported salary at Athletic, which is claimed to be worth around €200,000-per-week. He would also ask for a wage rise from any interested clubs, according to these reports.

Fabrizio Romano has spoken to The Daily Briefing on Williams’ situation. He has revealed that interested clubs, including Barcelona, are yet to know what the talented winger’s salary demands will be.

“I’m not aware of talks so far but Nico has really many suitors. Barcelona, English top clubs and not only… there’s lot of interest. I’m still told all the clubs are waiting to understand the financial package wanted by the player in terms of commission and salary. Barca appreciate him but it’s still early stages.”

Williams would be a fantastic signing for Barcelona, although it’s far from certain that they will be able to get him in the summer, due to their well-documented financial problems, which won’t give them much room to work with during negotiations, both with Athletic Club and the player himself.
