Former England striker Gary Lineker has blasted Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho for not doing enough nor coming up with the goods when it mattered in the club’s loss at the hands of Arsenal over the weekend.
United were beaten 1-0 by the Gunners, whose goal was grabbed by Leandro Trossard.
The result left Erik ten Hag’s men in eighth position in the Premier League standings, three points adrift of Newcastle in sixth and with just two top-flight games left to play.
United were slightly better and much more compact against Arsenal at Old Trafford. The team also registered more possession and more shots but unfortunately, they didn’t really test David Raya.
Most of the Red Devils’ joy in attack came down Garnacho’s flank on the left.
The Argentine produced multiple take-ons and got into some very promising positions but his decision-making often let him down – something that is expected of a player so young and still learning their craft.
However, this did not spare the 19-year-old from being criticised by Lineker.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, the former Leicester City and Barcelona made remarked, “Arsenal went there, it’s not a place where they’ve been particularly successful the last decade or so.”
“All they would have cared about at this stage was that they had to get that win come what may. There was a degree of caution to the game that, I was thinking, ‘God, they might pay for this, you know.'”
Lineker added, “Garnacho was a threat, but his final ball was awful the entire match, I thought.
“I mean, he’s dangerous and all it needed was, you know, one where he cuts in and could conceivably bend one in the top corner and then all of a sudden the title race is pretty much done really.”
United return to action on Wednesday when they take on Eddie Howe’s Newcastle – a crucial fixture that will have a huge say in determining who or not qualifies for the Europa League.
