A remarkable statistic, highlighting the longevity of Atlético Madrid head coach Diego Simeone, has come to the fore on Sunday evening.

Atlético, of course, marked their return to action earlier today.

Amid the club’s ongoing efforts to wrap up Champions League qualification for next season, the capital giants welcomed Celta Vigo to the Wanda Metropolitano, for a La Liga clash.

And, when all was said and done, a solitary strike on the part of Rodrigo de Paul proved enough to put Celta to the sword.

As much proved important in further opening the gap between Atléti and 5th-placed Athletic Club, to an all-but insurmountable eight points.

As alluded to above, though, it also proved a special victory for the man on the touchline at the Metropolitano.

This comes amid confirmation that Diego Simeone has now established himself as the all-time leader in points secured as a manager in La Liga.

The Argentine has overtaken previous record-holder Luis Aragonés, having now racked up a jaw-dropping 976 points across his stint on the bench in Spain’s top-flight.

A remarkable achievement, for a remarkable tactician.
