Ten Hag guided the Amsterdam club to three Eredivisie titles, two as part of a domestic double, as well as the 2019 Champions League semi-finals.

But a homecoming at the Johan Cruijff Arena is dependent on being sacked by the Red Devils, with the 54-year-old understood to be reluctant to step down from his post.

Ten Hag could find himself surplus to requirement at Old Trafford this summer as INEOS founder Sir Jim Ratcliffe plots sweeping changes following his 25% buy-in.

Ajax have several candidates on their shortlist to succeed John van ‘t Schip with ex-Chelsea boss Graham Potter and Nice’s Francesco Farioli also in the running.

The Eredivisie outfit are currently fifth in the table, some 15 points adrift of champions-elect PSV Eindhoven.
